❤️  "Knitbone" — The Legendary Topical Healer of Skin, Muscles, Joints & Sinew

Botanical Name: Symphytum officinale

🌱 The Herb History Called "Knitbone"

For more than 2,000 years, comfrey has been the healer people reached for when the body was broken — a torn muscle, a purple bruise, a twisted ankle, a stubborn wound that wouldn't close. The Greek physician Dioscorides wrote of it. Medieval monks grew it in every infirmary garden and pressed its root into poultices for battle wounds and broken bones — which is exactly how it earned its folk names: knitbone, boneset, bruisewort, and "the bone mender." No topical herb in the Western tradition is more beloved for helping the body knit itself back together.

We capture that legendary root at full strength in a clean liquid extract — a concentrated topical liniment you can apply directly to the skin or blend into your own salves, balms, and compresses. This is comfrey the way the old herbalists used it: on the body, not in it.

Grown organically. Extracted at full strength. Sealed in Miron violet glass to protect the living frequency of the root.

A word of honesty and care: Comfrey is a topical herb. Its root naturally contains compounds (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) that are not safe to swallow, which is why this extract is made and sold for external use only. Used the traditional way — on intact skin — comfrey is one of the most treasured healing botanicals on Earth. Please read the full safety section below.

What "Full-Strength" Delivers — The Phytochemical Arsenal

Comfrey's legendary reputation on skin and sinew comes from a remarkable set of compounds:

  • Allantoin — the superstar. A compound that stimulates new cell growth and speeds tissue regeneration — the science behind "knitbone." It's so effective that modern cosmetic and wound-care labs add allantoin to their finest formulas.

  • Rosmarinic acid — a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that calms swelling, redness, and soreness.

  • Mucilage — soothing, moisture-holding plant gel that softens, hydrates, and comforts dry, rough, irritated skin.

  • Tannins — gently astringent and tightening, helping tone and protect the skin's surface.

  • Phenolic acids & antioxidants — defending skin cells against free-radical wear.

  • Silica & minerals — supporting the raw materials of strong skin and connective tissue.

One root. A complete topical repair kit.

💡 How It Works — The Science of "Knitbone"

Comfrey's power is mostly one brilliant molecule: allantoin. Allantoin is a cell-proliferant — it actually encourages skin and connective-tissue cells to divide and multiply faster, accelerating the body's natural repair of the surface and the tissues just beneath it. Layer on rosmarinic acid's anti-inflammatory calm and mucilage's soothing moisture, and you have a botanical that helps the body rebuild, soothe, and settle — right where it hurts. That's why generations have trusted comfrey compresses on bruises, sprains, and aching joints.

Benefits, System by System — The Great External Healer

🩹 Bruises, Sprains & Strains — comfrey's crowning glory

  • The go-to traditional remedy for bruises, sprains, strains, and knocks — applied externally to speed comfort and recovery.

  • Allantoin and rosmarinic acid work together to calm swelling and support the healing of overstretched, bumped, and battered tissue.

  • Clinical research on comfrey preparations has shown meaningful relief for ankle sprains and acute muscle injury.

  • The classic athlete's, gardener's, and weekend-warrior's rub.

💪 Muscles & Joints

  • A cherished topical for sore, tired, overworked muscles and stiff, aching joints.

  • Comfrey creams have shown clinically meaningful relief for knee osteoarthritis and back pain in published studies.

  • Massaged over tight shoulders, a stiff neck, an aching lower back, or overused hands and knees for warming, soothing comfort.

🦴 Bones & Connective Tissue — the "knitbone" tradition

  • For centuries, comfrey compresses were laid over fractures, breaks, and deep sprains (set and treated by a professional) to support the body's knitting of bone and sinew — the very origin of the name.

  • Traditionally used to comfort tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue after strain.

🙌🏻 Skin Repair & Wound Comfort

  • Allantoin's cell-renewing power makes comfrey a time-honored topical for minor cuts, scrapes, cracks, and abrasions on intact or lightly broken skin.

  • Traditionally applied to chapped, split, and slow-to-mend skin to encourage smoother, faster surface repair.

🤰🏻 Scars & Stretch Marks

  • Long used to soften and smooth the look of scars and stretch marks, thanks to allantoin's renewing effect on skin texture.

🧴 Dry, Rough & Cracked Skin

  • Comfrey's mucilage and allantoin deeply soothe and soften cracked heels, rough elbows and knees, chapped hands, and weather-beaten skin.

  • A traditional balm for the roughest, most neglected patches.

🔥 Irritated & Inflamed Skin

  • Its anti-inflammatory, soothing nature has long comforted red, irritated, itchy, and inflamed skin — the kind of everyday flare-ups that need calming (external use, on intact skin).

🚫 Anti-Aging & Skin Renewal

  • Allantoin's cell-turnover boost supports smoother, softer, fresher-looking skin and helps soften the look of fine lines and rough texture — the reason it's a darling of premium skincare.

🫶 Nails, Cuticles & Hardworking Hands

  • Massaged around the nails, comfrey's softening, conditioning compounds help ragged cuticles and dry, cracked skin at the fingertips.

💈 Scalp & Hair — (topical, traditional)

  • Applied to the scalp, comfrey's soothing, conditioning nature is traditionally used to comfort a dry, flaky, irritated scalp and lend softness to the hair.

🌸 Beauty From the Outside In — Skin, Hands & Nails

Comfrey is a genuine beauty legend precisely because allantoin is a hero skincare ingredient — you'll find it in high-end moisturizers, healing balms, and anti-aging serums the world over. This is that ingredient, in its original, full-strength botanical form.
  • Renewal: encourages fresh cell turnover for smoother, softer, more supple skin.

  • Repair: comforts and helps mend rough, cracked, chapped, and weather-worn skin.

  • Soothe: calms redness, irritation, and the tight, dry feeling of stressed skin.

  • Smooth: softens the look of scars, stretch marks, fine lines, and rough texture.

For hands, heels, elbows, and every hardworking, well-loved part of you — comfrey is old-world beauty, restored.

🧪 Why This Comfrey Extract Is Different

Certified Organic. Clean root grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical residues.

Full-Strength Extraction. A potent, true-to-the-root liquid liniment — the whole spectrum of comfrey's allantoin and soothing compounds intact, ready to apply or blend into your own salves and balms.

Miron Violet Glass Bottles. Ordinary clear or amber glass lets in the light wavelengths that degrade delicate plant compounds. Miron violet glass filters out the visible light that causes decay while letting in the beneficial UVA and infrared that preserve — protecting the root's living potency and energetic frequency for 5 to 10 years.

Child-Proof Dropper. Every bottle is fitted with a child-resistant dropper cap for clean, controlled dispensing onto skin, cloth, or into your salve base — and protection for the little ones and pets in your home.

Versatile Topical Base. Apply directly, dab onto a compress, or blend drops into unscented lotion, oil, or balm to make your own comfrey salve.

📌 How to Use — External Use Only

This extract is for topical (external) use only. Do not take internally.

Shake gently before use. Patch-test first on a small area of the inner arm and wait 24 hours. Then apply a small amount to the intact (unbroken) skin over the affected area — a sore muscle, an aching joint, a bruise, or rough, dry skin — up to 2–3 times daily. You can apply the liniment directly, dab it onto a cloth compress, or blend a dropperful into unscented lotion, carrier oil, or a salve base for a make-your-own comfrey balm. Wash hands after applying. Use for short periods only (see Warnings).

Warnings & Contraindications — Please Read Carefully

Comfrey is a powerful traditional healer, but it must be used correctly. Please respect these guidelines — they are not optional.

  • EXTERNAL USE ONLY. Never take comfrey internally. Comfrey root contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), natural compounds that can cause serious, cumulative liver damage and are linked to cancer when absorbed into the body. Do not swallow this product, and keep it away from food and drink.

  • Apply only to intact, unbroken skin. Do not apply to open wounds, deep cuts, broken skin, or damaged skin barriers — this allows the harmful alkaloids to be absorbed into the body. Surface-level, intact skin only.

  • Limit duration. Do not use on the same area for more than about 10 days at a time, and not more than 4–6 weeks total per year. More is not better with comfrey; brief, targeted use is the safe way.

  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The alkaloids can reach and harm a baby.

  • Do not use on children. Children's skin absorbs more, and they are more vulnerable to the alkaloids.

  • Do not use if you have liver disease or take medications that affect the liver, and avoid combining with heavy alcohol use.

  • Do a patch test and discontinue immediately if you notice any rash, redness, or irritation.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after each application, and never apply near the eyes, lips, or any mucous membranes.

  • Not for large areas of skin at once — treat the specific spot that needs it, not wide swaths of the body.

  • Alcohol content. This is an alcohol-based liniment for topical use; keep away from flames until dry, and avoid on freshly shaved or broken skin (it will sting and increase absorption).

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets, and store safely despite the child-resistant cap.

  • When in doubt, consult a qualified healthcare provider — especially for a serious injury, a wound, or any condition needing medical care. Comfrey is a comfort and support, not a substitute for proper treatment of fractures, deep wounds, or infections.

Ingredients: Organic Comfrey root (Symphytum officinale) extract in vodka, for external use only. Just root and spirit — no added water, no fillers, no additives.
