Burdock Root Tincture — Made With Certified-Organic Burdock Root

‼️ What It Is
Burdock is Arctium lappa, the big-leaved, thistle-headed plant whose hooked burrs stick to every dog and pant leg in late summer — the burr that inspired Velcro. It is a biennial, and the medicine is in the first-year taproot, which drives two or three feet straight down into the soil. Burdock root is a classic alterative: an herb taken over weeks to improve the way the body clears waste through the liver, kidneys, skin, and lymph. In Japan, the same root is a vegetable, gobo, and in traditional Chinese medicine the seed, niu bang zi, is a separate remedy. Our tincture is the dried root only.

Why the root, and why dried. The first-year taproot is where burdock stores its bitter lactones, lignans, and polyacetylenes — the alterative medicine. The leaf is a poultice herb, and the seed is a separate remedy in Chinese medicine. Dried, because the bitter and lignan fraction keeps through drying, and a dried root puts more plant in each drop than the same weight of fresh root, which is mostly water.

📋  A Short History
Burdock has been in European and Asian herbal medicine for well over a thousand years. Medieval herbalists used the root for skin eruptions and “impurities of the blood,” and it became one of the standard blood-purifying herbs of the Western tradition, appearing in the American Eclectic materia medica of the 1800s and in nearly every folk formula for the skin. It is one of the herbs in the Essiac formula — burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm and turkey rhubarb — that has circulated among cancer patients since the 1920s. On the table, gobo has been a staple of Japanese cooking for centuries.

Tinctures themselves are as old as distilled spirit. Once alcohol could be produced reliably, apothecaries found that steeping a plant in it drew out the plant’s medicine, held it in solution, and kept it from spoiling for years. By the early 1800s, tinctures were standard preparations across America, and the American herbal pharmacies of the nineteenth century built entire catalogs on them.

✨ What It May Do — A Body-Wide Tour
Skin. This is what burdock is best known for. It has been used since medieval times for chronic, stubborn skin trouble — eczema, psoriasis, acne, boils, dry scaly patches — on the reasoning that skin is an organ of elimination, and a skin that is breaking out is doing a job the liver, kidneys, and bowel should be doing. Burdock supports clear, calm skin by supporting those organs so the skin can stop covering for them. It works slowly, over weeks, from within.

Liver and bile. Burdock root is a mild bitter. It supports the flow of bile and gastric juices and the liver’s clearing work, and it is one of the herbs traditionally paired with dandelion root for a spring liver cleanse.

Kidneys and urinary tract. Burdock is a gentle diuretic. It supports healthy urine flow and kidney function, and has been used for centuries for water retention and mild urinary irritation.

Lymphatic system. Burdock is one of the classic lymphatic herbs, supporting the movement of lymph — the “stuck” feeling, the swollen glands — and this is the mechanism behind its blood-purifier reputation: it helps the lymph carry waste to where the body can clear it.

Blood sugar. Burdock root has a long folk use for supporting steady blood sugar and is used as a supportive herb in a metabolic approach.

Digestion and the gut. The bitter taste primes digestion. Burdock is taken before meals to support sluggish digestion, and the root is a traditional gut-soothing food.

Joints. Burdock has been used since medieval times for gout and rheumatic aches — the old logic being that these are conditions of waste the body has failed to clear, which is exactly what an alterative supports.

Immune and inflammatory balance. The root’s lignans (arctigenin among them) are studied for anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activity, and burdock’s traditional place in fever and infection formulas rests on the same ground.

Hair and beauty. Burdock root oil is an old European remedy for hair loss and dandruff, rubbed into the scalp. Taken internally, the herb’s beauty reputation is for the skin: clear, calm skin is the visible sign of a body that is clearing itself well.

💪 Full-Strength
This tincture is Full-Strength — certified-organic dried burdock root in 200-proof alcohol used neat, straight from the drum, with no water added. Nothing else is in the bottle. We customize to need, and the extraction ratio is printed on the label so the strength of the bottle is something your customer can read, not take on faith. An extraction ratio is the weight of plant to the volume of liquid it was steeped in; the less liquid per gram of plant, the more plant in every drop. We print it because Full-Strength ought to mean something you can verify.

💜 In the Bottle — Violet Glass, Child-Resistant Dropper
This tincture comes in a 1 oz (30 mL) bottle — the one size we offer — in Miron violet glass, the Swiss-developed biophotonic glass used by the makers who take shelf life seriously. Ordinary clear, amber, and blue glass let in most of the visible light spectrum, and visible light is what degrades a plant extract — it drives the oxidation that fades color, flattens taste, and breaks down the active compounds. Violet glass blocks the complete visible spectrum. What it allows through is a narrow band at the violet end, together with UV-A and near-infrared, the frequencies that Miron’s own testing shows preserve the contents rather than degrade them. The practical result, which Miron has demonstrated against clear, amber and blue glass over months of side-by-side storage, is that what is in the bottle stays what it was when it was bottled. It also gives the bottle an unmistakably premium presentation.

Burdock’s bitter lactones and polyacetylenes degrade in light; the polyacetylenes in particular are among the most light-fragile compounds in any root.

The dropper is a child-resistant cap: a closure that must be pressed and turned to open, over a glass pipette with a graduated bulb. The pipette lets you count drops exactly, which is how every dose on this page is written, and the closure makes a bottle of high-proof alcohol far harder for a curious child to open. It is resistant, not proof — keep it out of reach.

🌱 Made With Certified-Organic Botanicals
This tincture is made with certified-organic burdock root, grown and handled under the National Organic Program and traceable to its certificate. The alcohol is a 200-proof neutral spirit, used neat. We buy only certified-organic botanicals for this line.

👀 Pairs Well With
  • Dandelion Root — the classic pairing. Burdock works on skin, lymph, and kidneys; dandelion works on liver and bile. Together they are the two-herb spring cleanse of the Western tradition. Take both before meals in the same glass of water, each at its own dose.
  • Chicory Root for a stronger bitter, liver-forward cleanse. Burdock, dandelion, and chicory together are a three-root alterative; because all three are bitters that act on the same digestive and liver pathways, take each at the lower end of its range when all three are in the glass.
  • Echinacea Angustifolia for skin eruptions with an infectious edge — boils, acne with active breakouts. Burdock clears; echinacea fights.
  • Ginger for anyone who finds three cold, bitter roots chilling to the digestion — a few drops of ginger warms the pairing.
  • Wormwood, Oregano Leaf and Clove — during a parasite cleanse, burdock keeps lymph, kidneys and skin clearing what the cleanse releases. Burdock before meals, the cleanse herbs with meals, each at the lower end of its range.

When taking two or three tinctures together, each herb keeps its own dose. You do not add the drop counts into one bigger number, and bitters stacked together are taken at the lower end of each range.

🛍️ Selling It
Why It Sells Now. Burdock is the herb the “detox” customer has been looking for without knowing its name. The liver-cleanse and skin-from-within conversations have moved fully into the mainstream — clear skin is now understood as a gut-and-liver outcome, not a topical one — and burdock is the oldest, plainest skin-clearing root in the Western tradition, with a story that reaches from medieval herbals to Japanese kitchens to the Essiac formula. It is also one of the few “blood purifier” herbs with a mechanism you can explain in a sentence: it moves lymph, bile, and kidneys so the skin stops doing its job.

Who Buys It.
The adult acne customer, the eczema and psoriasis customer, and anyone doing a spring or seasonal cleanse. Women 25–55 are the core; the customer who has tried topical everything is the one who converts hardest. It is also a strong sale to the customer building a three-root liver protocol.

💰 How to Sell It.
Open with: “Skin that keeps breaking out is not a skin problem. It is an elimination problem, and this is the root for it.”

Tell the Velcro story — the burr that stuck to a Swiss engineer’s dog — and then the medicine: a thousand years of use for stubborn skin, working from the inside over weeks. Explain that it is a bitter alterative, that it pairs with dandelion as the classic two-root cleanse, and that skin can look briefly worse in week one before it clears — say that up front, and you will not get the bottle back. Say plainly that the tincture is the bitter root, not a prebiotic inulin product; the honesty sells the strength.

Sell it with Dandelion Root as the two-root cleanse and Chicory Root for the customer who wants the full three-root liver protocol. Add Ginger Root for anyone who finds bitters chilling. Burdock alone is a sale; Burdock plus Dandelion is the sale you want.

👣 Take the Next Step
Order twelve and keep one for the house. Burdock is the root you take before you sell it: two months on it, paired with Dandelion Root, and you will have your own skin to point to when a customer asks whether it works.

Superstar Ingredients: Compare our deck with any other manufacturer! (Some Additional Customization is Possible.)

Ingredient Deck: Organic Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) Extract. Other Ingredients: Alcohol.

Do not use the product if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Shelf Life: A high-proof alcohol tincture is one of the most stable preparations in herbal medicine to begin with: 200-proof alcohol is a preservative as well as a solvent, and at that strength microbes cannot survive in it. In violet glass, stored tightly closed in a cool, dark place, the result is exceptionally long shelf stability when properly stored. Heat and repeated opening work against it; light does not reach it. It does not need refrigeration. If sediment settles over time, that is plant matter, not spoilage — shake and use.

To optimize product shelf life, products should be stored in a cool (77° or cooler) / dry place with minimal exposure to direct light. Keep lid tightly closed.

📌 How to Use:

  • Adults: 15–30 drops, two to three times daily.
  • Teens 16 and over: 8–15 drops, twice daily.
  • Sensitive individuals: start with 8 drops.

On the tongue, then swallow — a bitter works by being tasted, so put the drops in a teaspoon of water, hold it in the mouth a few seconds, and swallow. Water rather than juice — the bitter taste is the signal that starts the liver and digestion working, and sweetness cancels it. Plain water, or a sip of unsweetened tea. Shake well before use.
Take it for 4–8 weeks. Skin changes show over weeks, not days; the second month is where burdock proves itself.

When to Take It
Before meals — ten to twenty minutes ahead of eating, so the bitter taste has time to prime digestion. Morning and midday doses are the most useful; the evening dose is optional.

With Food or Empty Stomach
Empty stomach, just before food. That is how a bitter works: taste it, then eat. The bitter taste on the tongue is part of the medicine — it is the signal that starts the liver and digestion working — so water, not juice.

Do You Need a Binder?
Not usually. Burdock is a mover, not an antimicrobial — it helps the body carry out its own waste and does not create a die-off. If you are using burdock as part of a heavier cleanse alongside antimicrobial herbs like oregano, clove, or wormwood, the binder belongs to those herbs, not to burdock; see those pages.

Contraindications
  • Not for use in pregnancy. Burdock has a traditional reputation as a uterine stimulant.
  • Not for anyone allergic to the daisy family (Asteraceae) — ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, chamomile — burdock is a member and cross-reactions occur.
Warnings
  • Burdock is a diuretic; it increases urination and can add to the effect of anything else that does. Drink water.
  • It can lower blood sugar; anyone managing blood sugar should watch their numbers when starting it.
  • Skin may look briefly worse in the first week or two as the body starts clearing — this is common with alteratives and settles.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Contains alcohol.
